Location: Lavaklubi, Kansallisteatteri / National Theatre
Price: free entrance

City Ghettos of today  is a project realized in six European cities that invites associations, organizations, individual citizens, artists and other actors in the field of art, theatre, intercultural civil society and non-formal learning to construct together meaningful experiences and artistic expressions related to the phenomenon of ghettos. We use the concept of ghetto here as an idea that includes comparisons between the margin and the centre, the plurality and homogeneity, the inside and the outside, the familiar and unfamiliar. We ask whether spatial and concrete, or invisible and abstract walls separate groups of people from other groups and if so, why, when and how this happens here in Helsinki.

The results of the process will be presented in September 2014 in Helsinki as an installation in two spaces, cultural centre Stoa in Itkeskus and shopping centre Forum in the centre of the city. During this two-weeks period the collective artistic creation continues in guidance of the international team of artists coming from Warsaw, Bologna, Milan, Paris and Berlin.

A public debate and seminar will be organized in Lavaklubi of the National Theatre presenting cases of art and community projects related to social studies and urban realities.

The project partners in Helsinki are Ptarmigan ry, Pacunet ry, Helin Rautavaara Ethnographic Museum, National Theatre, Citizens Forum (SKAF) and Arts Promotion CEntre / Uusimaa.

If you are interested in presenting your case or in getting more information of the project, please contact the coordinator , regional artist on cultural diversity.
