Creating space for listening // Fält & Fusco

What can we read and learn from the lines we create together? What can we communicate through drawing? It is a way not only to visualize gestures but to make it possible to touch, feel and sense the intensity of the movement and the personal space needed. Drawing can reveal one’s limits and enables one to change them.

With this installation the artists will challenge themselves and the visitors to meet, have wordless conversations and create new space together. We are using drawing and the sounds that it makes as tools to listen, ask, address, touch and mark what’s been found. The work starts from dialogues between Fält and Fusco and continues with inviting visitors to participate in the drawing on the walls and floor of the gallery space. Finally, these meetings are all connected to each other with the lines created.

Listening to a non-verbal conversation is about intuitively interpreting someone else’s actions through our own body. The visitor can practice this through an immersive sonic experience, where several recorded and re-composed drawing dialogues are spatially overlayed on the drawings in the physical space. Although we can only see the result of past drawings, the space is filled by the history of invisible gestures, the sound of which can let us reconstruct the intention behind them and how the mark was formed. Emma Vilina Fält (BA (Design), MA (Fine Art), FIN, s.1983) works in the field of drawing, installation, performance and live art. Her main interests are in workshops as live acts, contact, listening and togetherness of drawing. Her work takes a comprehensive look at the act of drawing as a means to make contact and collaboratively explore our experience of the world. The body of her work combines drawing, sound and movement and is inspired by language, sites and collisions of living and inanimate worlds. Fält has shown her work in Finland and abroad in festivals, symposiums and museums. Emma Teaches drawing at Art School Maa in Helsinki (FIN), and works as a visiting teacher in different schools, communities and institutions around the world. Fält is one of the co-directors in Thinking through Drawing – an Interdisciplinary education and research – network.

Roberto Fusco (formerly Pugliese), (M.Phil. Music and Media Technology, D. Sc. (Technology), ITA/FI, b. 1980), works with time-based digital and physical media. Often concerned with memories, recordings and loss, his pieces can incorporate animation, sound, moving objects and the modification of physical media using programmed hardware and software. By collecting, processing and coupling audio and visual material, he works towards a common language among visual and sonic imageries while reconstructing experiences already vanished. The installations often use sound and its transformation to establish alternative relations between the visitor and the space. He has presented his work in festivals such as VAFT (FI), NIME, RIXC (LT), FLUSSI (ITA), Currents New Media 2016 (USA), Videoforma (RU), PIXELACHE (FI), AAVE (FI), Borealis (NO), Plektrum (EE), CARTES FLUX (FI) and Loikka (FI) and in galleries such as Titanik, Rajatila, MUU Galleria (FI), the Science Gallery (IE) and EYEBEAM (NY, US).

Fält-Fusco collaboration started two years ago through conversations between ink-based and digital drawing, where they concentrate through improvisation and scores on each others action, gesture and energy in the trace. Beyond the different approaches and media they individually employ, Fält and Fusco are developing a common language grounded in the materiality of the dialogue between sonic and visual expression, the energy that the tangible trace embodies and the emotional quality of the movement that creates it.
