In February 2021 the new MUU Helsinki Contemporary Art Centre at Cable Factory is taken over by sonic arts. The month is dedicated to a collaborative sonic arts festival with installations, workshops, concerts, and talks concentrating on sonic arts. The month starts with an online sound and drawing workshop by artist Emma Fält on February 5th and continues with a concert evening curated by Äänen Lumo on February 6th. Throughout the month the sound installation Song for the Unknown by Heta Kaisto and Antti Ikonen can be experienced in the gallery space. Ääneen – Sonic Arts Month is coordinated by Äänen Lumo in collaboration with MUU, and includes several actors in the local field of sonic arts.

MUU ry reached out to Äänen Lumo / Charm of Sound in 2020 to collaborate in organising a Sonic Arts Month. The idea developed to involve the big network of Sonic Arts communities that Äänen Lumo has been working with in the two-years-long project NeuroVerkko financed by Kone Foundation. The programme of the Sonic Arts festival was formed through an open call for co-curation and Äänen Lumo has acted as the convener and coordinator of the month together with MUU ry. The artists and associations participating in the month are Emma Fält (FI), Antti Ikonen (FI), Heta Kaisto (FI), Third Space, J. Koho (FI), Kati Roover (FI), Marloes Van Son (NL), Alejandro Olarte (CO), Freja Bäckman (FI), MYÖS (FI), Free Frag / Steeve Bauras (FR), Samuli Tanner (FI), Minerva Juolahti (FI), Joona Mäkelä (FI), Saara Viika (FI), Timo Tikka (FI), L O (Lora Dimova (BU/FI)), Marko Timlin (DE/FI), and Ana Gutieszca (MX/FI).

Due to the recent development of the pandemic, the Sonic Arts Month festival has become a platform for experimenting with hybrid forms of local and remote participation to workshops and performances together with Station of the Commons, a local reality that is an ongoing collaborative initiative on digital commoning practices. Station of Commons was initiated in February 2020 and it investigates the possibilities of reappropriating technology within public space. www.stationofcommons.org

Given the circumstances in which the festival is taking place, the events will be streamed and accessible remotely, but MUU Helsinki event space can still be accessed in person in small groups of max 5 people.

The festival is realised with the support of Niilo Helanderin säätiö.
