“When I create illustrations, they are often self-driven, influenced by current events, politics, and the injustices that deeply affect me. My goal extends beyond storytelling; I aim to express my perspective and advocate for change.
Impactful illustration highlights the importance of criticism and critical thinking, both in personal projects and in journalistic illustrations that engage with the social and cultural landscape.
What is it like to express your most critical ideas through illustration and visual arts?”

Sahar Ajami is a Helsinki-based illustrator who moved from Oslo to Helsinki three years ago. Her work centers on illustrating emotions and storytelling through images. Growing up in Iran, she witnessed strong women fighting for their rights, which instilled in her a passion for creating impactful illustrations that advocate for change. Her illustrations focus on women, addressing social and emotional issues as well as human rights.
Her practice encompasses visual art, illustration, graphic design, cartoons, and picture books, with projects ranging from editorial illustrations to award-winning cartoons. Her work has been published in numerous books and art catalogues.
In 2018, with the mission of creating a better world through art, she co-founded Beyond Art Oslo with five other women to organize art events and auctions that support charities and important causes.
