We are proud to present the next World Music Workshop with Valeria Conte, organized by the International School of Music Finland in cooperation with the Maailman musiikin keskus / Global Music Centre.

Klezmer is known as a type of secular instrumental Jewish Eastern-European folk music that has roots within the Ashkenazi tradition of pre-WWII Yiddish speaking communities. The repertoire includes music for dancing as well as music for listening. Its fascinating character is compounded by the duality of melancholy and joy, expressing the singing of the soul and imitating the human voice, through i.e. sobbing and laughing.

During the 1970s a Klezmer revival arose in both Europe and America, giving life to both traditional projects as well as creating new original Yiddish music. Nowadays many bands are influenced by the Klezmer style and several worldwide associations organize events and festivals related to it.

The workshop will be presenting a brief overview on how, where and when the Klezmer music style developed, linking some notions of Yiddish language and Hasidic singing. Characteristic elements such as modes, ornaments, rhythms and ensemble playing dynamics will be introduced while listening to original recordings of Klezmorim (Klezmer musicians) and learning traditional Klezmer tunes.

The workshop is open to any instrumentalist with an intermediate or advanced knowledge of their instrument. Melodies and rhythms will be taught by ear and scores will be provided at the end of the workshop.
