Talk: A Brief Curatorial History of Digital and Media Art

In this talk, curator Sarah Cook will discuss the history of exhibitions that have highlighted the move from an object-oriented to systems-oriented culture, and the rise of the information age, what Luciano Floridi refers to as the fourth revolution. The talk will consider significant museum and gallery-based experiments in exhibiting technology-based art including Cybernetic Serendipity, Software, Information, and Les Immateriaux, as well as recent curatorial projects that Sarah has been involved in, including NEoN (North East of North), Scotland’s only digital art festival which takes place annually in Dundee and this year considered Media Archaeology as its theme.

Sarah Cook is a curator, writer and researcher based in Scotland. She is editor of the book INFORMATION (Documents of Contemporary Art, Whitechapel and MIT Press, 2016) and is co-author (with Beryl Graham) of Rethinking Curating: Art After New Media (MIT Press, 2010; Chinese edition 2016). She co-edited with Sara Diamond Euphoria & Dystopia: The Banff New Media Institute Dialogues (Banff Centre Press, 2011).
