Welcome to the second session of Celebrating 40 years of Taidekoulu Maa! Panos Balomenos has been teaching painting at Art School Maa for 11 years.

The lecture will take the form of an interview and focus on Panos Balomenos’s practice and how teaching has informed it. We will discuss Panos’s latest works, how he views the process of painting and what happens when teaching and learning it together. The interview will be facilitated by H Ouramo and is part of a series of four lectures celebrating 40 years of Maa realised in collaboration with Catalysti Ry.

In their work Panos uses watercolour painting, installation and performance. Panos combines personal narratives, historical events and fiction to explore subjects such as power relations, sexuality and politics.
Their watercolour pieces are often carried out as series. Each painting contains several layers, stories and references.
They believe that in our contemporary world, where our lives and habits are scarily digitalised, painting is a unique tool left intact and suitable for engagement, social criticism and reflection.
