Too Hot For Art
There is no need for further information about climate change, no need to tell people they have to spend less, eat less meat, travel less and don’t fly at all – the bombardment of information and education is relentless and will for sure not be looked for by people visiting the World Village Festival with the theme of Climate Change.
Better to talk about what to do in these upcoming seemingly unavoidable circumstances and for that it is best to look at artists first, especially those who moved to another country/culture, as they are the ones who, by profession, dare to jump into the unknown. So is there still any art when temperatures are rising for an average of 4 degrees centigrade? Of course there is, probably everybody still alive has to be an artist to cope with all unpredictabilities presented on a daily base. There will be art but will there be audience?
These provocative lines under the title Too Hot For Art form the invitation for two to four artists who want to join Willem Wilhelmus (project curator) in this project to present ‘something performative and participatory’ during the WVF 19, May 25 and 26. The base of the art actions will be a container placed pretty much in the center of the festival terrain. The white container will be marked with TOO HOT (right side) and FOR ART (left).
The theme of WVF 19 (https://rove.me/to/finland/world-village-festival) = Climate Change and that means not only a change in meteorological climate but also in social climate, mental climate, political climate and for sure artistic climate. So there is a lot too be inspired by.
As a preparation we need to investigate what role art played in times of crises. For that art historians and historians in the field of social and political science can be interviewed. With the ultimate question: what role can art play in the upcoming global crisis, locally and globally. Hopefully this will be the source of inspiration for the art actions during the festival. The total outcome will be presented in a publication of some sort – depending on (further) funding.
When you want and can contribute to this project, then please contact Willem before 5 February under the heading toohotforart at
