Catalystis withdrawal from IACF

Dear members,

As you know on 9.3.2017 there was an Extraordinary General Meeting at Baribal Bar, to discuss the position of Catalysti in IACF.

After a long discussion, Catalysti members voted to withdraw membership form IACF, with 8 against 7 votes. Following this decision, Sepideh Rahaa and Kem Pellicer resigned from IACF board.

This meeting was called by the Catalysti Board to address concerns about the working methods employed by the International Artists Centre Finland (IACF).

In one of its grant applications, IACF included Catalysti members’ projects without consent, nor mention of the authors. Catalysti feels that although no permanent harm has come from this oversight or act in haste, these acts, whether deliberate or unconscious, are serious.

In addition, the Catalysti board expressed concern about IACF action plan. This current action plan seems to repeat an old pattern of actions performed by most institutions which have not resulted in bettering foreign artists’ work conditions.

It is important for Catalysti to stand strongly in alignment with its moral mandate as an example of the future we envision for foreign artists in Finland.

Through this decision we hope to find a more productive way for collaboration between Catalysti and IACF independently, on a peer-to-peer basis.

Catalysti trusts that the two organisations can continue collaboration by listening and learning from each other, with the common goal to make better working conditions for foreign artists in Finland.

Stay tuned! Well hold other open meetings this spring. Btw. the Annual General Meeting, to vote for Catalystis new board, will take place at the end of April.

AS NEW ELEMENTS EMERGED,
IT IS VITAL TO VOTE AGAIN ABOUT OUR MEMBERSHIP IN IACF

Sunday 19.2 there was a meeting between the board of Catalysti and the board of IACF.
Catalysti board members have voiced a concern about the integrity of IACF.
Concern was raised when an IACF grant proposal was sent using Catalysti’s project database without consent, nor mentioning authors.

The board voted (5 to withdraw, 2 to stay, 2 null votes) to withdraw full membership from the IACF
in order to observe the progress and practice of the IACF
and to ensure ethical practice before committing to full membership.
The board remains divided on this subject.

All members of Catalysti are warmly invited to discuss and vote on the future of Catalysti with the IACF,
if we should stay, if we should change our status from members to observers or trial member (kokelasjsen)
and to continue a friendly collaboration on different base.

We will update you on the situation by giving you more details at the meeting.

Your presence is important! Please register by email to
 before 8.3.

Best Regards,

The Catalysti Board

The Catalysti Board

Catalysti joined International Artists Center Finland

During the Extraordinary General Meeting, held on 18th November 2016, Catalysti members voted to become part of the new association International Artists Center Finland, which gathers artists associations working in the transcultural domain. Sepideh Rahaa and Kem Pellicer gave their availability to represent Catalysti on the board of IACF.

The vote was preceded by an introduction by Tomi Purovaara, who presented the idea of the new association. Followed an interesting and manifold discussion about advantages and disadvantages to join IACF. The proposition was accepted with 11 votes pro and 7 contra.

The assembly was also active to propose ideas for 2017: Ilmiteatteri is looking for contributions for Suomi 100, an open call will be launched soon. For the Week Against Racism, in March 2017, Anna Ruth will coordinate the events in Jyvskyl and Sepideh Rahaa proposed to coordinate the live art event in Lavaklubi. Vishnu Vardani will coordinate an exhibition in Third Space, which will hopefully tour around Finland. Catalysti will take part again in World Village Festival in May 2017, propositions are welcomed.

It was underlined the importance to decentralize the work in Catalysti: all members are invited to be active and contribute!

The next operational meeting, open to all Catalysti members, will be held in Caf Pikku Georgia on 27.1.2017 at 5-8 pm.
